The Shades and Symmetry of the Outer Sunset

The Outer Sunset is San Francisco’s sleepy surf town located on the far western edge of the city, bordering the Pacific Ocean. The New York Times wrote a small piece about the transformation of this neighborhood during the pandemic. I’ve called the Outer Sunset home since 2021.

What was once a sea of sand dunes became a streetcar suburb of small single-family homes in the 1930s and 1940s. Constructed by a single developer, Henry Doelger, these colorful abodes were featured in LIFE magazine and became the inspiration for the song “Little Boxes” by Malvina Reynolds.

I’ve always been fascinated by the colors and shapes of Outer Sunset houses. While all of these homes started as kits in Mr. Doelger’s mind, they’ve developed into unique art pieces over the decades. No two homes are alike.

So I grabbed my camera during a few classic Sunset sunsets and put together this gallery wall.
