Learn How to Play: Fake It Till You Make It

Chief Fun Officer is my series of original team-building games designed for corporate teams to help people connect, laugh, and create memorable moments in person, remotely, or anywhere in between.

Download the rules and city maps to “Fake It Till You Make It”.

🎯 OBJECTIVE

Your team is heading to a company offsite in a new city, planning to explore, bond, and have some fun together.

Everyone knows exactly where the group is going…except one player who was asleep during the meeting.

👉 The Faker must blend in, figure out the location, and avoid getting caught

👉 Everyone else must work together to identify the Fake

NOTE: This game is designed for remote teams (like Zoom) only.

🖥️ SETUP

  1. The Chief Fun Officer (CFO) selects a city board and chooses one location at random (see cities below)
  2. The CFO shares their screen so all players can see the full board of locations
  3. The CFO sends a private message to each player:
    • The same location to all but one player
    • FAKER” to one player

🎭 ROLES

Everyone Else

You know the location the team is heading to.

Your goal is to help each other confirm who’s real — without making it too obvious.

  • Answer questions honestly, but carefully
  • Give clues that are helpful, but not too specific
  • Pay attention to how others respond

The Faker

You missed the meeting and have no idea where the team is going.

Your goal is to blend in and figure it out before you get caught.

  • Listen closely to what others say
  • Give believable, slightly vague answers
  • Try to deduce the location from context

🔁 GAMEPLAY

The conversation flows naturally around the group:

  • One player starts by asking any other player a question about the offsite
  • The chosen player answers the question, then asks a different player a new question
  • Players can ask about the location, the experience, or what to expect

There is no fixed turn order — questions can move freely around the group.

💬 QUESTIONS

Good questions help narrow things down without giving everything away.

  • Ask about the vibe, setting, or experience
  • Keep answers clear, but not overly detailed
  • Avoid naming the location or giving obvious clues

⚠️ If you’re too specific, the Faker may figure it out

⚠️ If you’re too vague, you may look suspicious

ACCUSATIONS

At any point during the conversation, any player can attempt to accuse someone of being the Faker.

When an accusation is made:

  1. The game pauses immediately
  2. Players openly discuss their reasoning
  3. All players (except the accused) must decide whether they agree

👉 If everyone agrees, the accused must reveal their role

👉 If anyone disagrees, the accusation fails and the game continues

🧠 FAKER POWER

The Faker doesn’t have to wait to be accused.

At any point in the game, the Faker may choose to guess the location.

  • If the guess is correct, the Faker wins immediately
  • If the guess is incorrect, the Faker loses immediately

🏁 END OF ROUND

If the accused IS the Faker:

They get one final chance to guess the location.

  • Correct guess → Faker wins
  • Incorrect guess → Everyone else wins

If the accused is NOT the Faker:

The accusation was wrong.

👉 The Faker wins immediately

⏱️ FINAL ROUND RULE

Once every player has answered at least one question:

👉 The group must stop questioning and make a final accusation

This ensures the round moves forward and doesn’t stall.
