This is me proudly wearing my York Revolution Pride cap in 2023 at their stadium near my childhood home with my mom and sis.
Last week, this same minor league baseball team actually forfeited a game because players refused to wear this colorful cap on their annual Pride Night.
They were empowered by my beloved San Francisco Giants who, days earlier, protested their own Pride night by scribbling Old Testament verses about rainbows on their caps.
Myself and millions of others make a choice to wear Pride gear because we want our LGBTQ friends, family members, coworkers, and fellow baseball fans to know they are welcome, valued, and loved.
Those players made a different choice.
But one choice none of us make is our sexuality. I believe God created each of us exactly as we are.
I can’t believe my favorite major and minor league teams, separated by 3,000 miles and connected to two different chapters of my life, would both end up at the center of national controversies over exclusion.
While none of us choose how we’re made, I do choose where I spend my money, whose gear I wear, and which brands earn my support. And I’ll continue supporting those who choose love over judgement, and acceptance over exclusion.
